1939: Frank Sinatra recorded "All or Nothing at All" with the Harry James Band.

1955: "I Hear You Knocking" by Smiley Lewis debuts on the U.S. R&B chart. (The song is later covered by Dave Edmunds)

1955: A London Judge fines Sidney Adams Turner £3 10s for "creating an abominable noise." Turner’s crime? He threatens his neighbours by saying "I will drive you mad." He then plays "Shake, Rattle and Roll" by Bill Haley at full volume for two and a half hours.

1963: The Ronettes single, "Be My Baby" enters the chart.

1967: The Beatles announced that they would handle their own affairs following the death of manager Brian Epstein.

1968: Fleetwood Mac adds 18 year old Danny Kirwin to its guitar playing stable. Kirwin joins Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer.

1968: Cream’s "Fresh Cream" enters the LP chart. It contains the hit single, "Sunshine Of Your Love."

1969: Bob Dylan made his first paid appearance at England’s Isle of Wight Pop Festival. He was backed by the band and it was his first show since his motorcycle accident three years earlier.

1971: A security guard was stabbed to death at a Who concert in Forest Hills, New York.

1973: Paul McCartney receives a gold record for "Live and Let Die."

1974: The Rolling Stones released "Goat’s Head Soup."

1974: "The Partridge Family" television show ended.

1974: In federal court, John Lennon testified the Nixon administration tried to have him deported because of his involvement with the anti-war demonstrations at the 1972 Republican convention in Miami.

1974: Carole King's "Jazzman" was released.

1976: A Judge rules that George Harrison is guilty of subconsciously plagiarising the tune of "He’s So Fine" in composing the single "My Sweet Lord."

1980: Karen Carpenter marries a California real estate developer.

1980: Pat Benatar’s "Crimes Of Passion" LP enters the chart. The album features her signature song "Hit Me With Your Best Shot."

1985: Bryan Adams’ "Summer of ’69" peaks at #5 on the pop singles chart while Billy Joel’s "You’re Only Human (Second Wind)" peaks at #9.

1986: Bob Geldof marries Paula Yates.

1987: Michael Jackson's "Bad" video was televised for the first time on CBS-TV.

1988: Julianne Phillips filed for divorce from Bruce Springsteen.

1988: Bob Seger and his wife Annette Sinclair filed for a divorce.

1989: The Rolling Stones began their first concert tour in eight years, as their "Steel Wheels" tour kicks off at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia.

1991: Metallica’s self-titled album debuted at #1 on Billboard’s pop album chart.

1997: James Brown became the first U.S. artist to appear in Lebanon following the recent lift of the ban on U.S. travel to the country.

1997: The Microsoft Network netcast U2’s performance in Dublin.

1998: Madonna filed suit against the YMCA to prevent it from building a high-rise residential tower near Lincoln Center in New York City, NY.

1998: As he prepares to become an Internet Service Provider, David Bowie holds a number of webcast performances featuring Ani DiFranco, the Specials, Jesus and Mary Chain, the Jay Hawks and Spacehog.
