1956: Tony Crombie and the Rockets become first British rock and roll band to tour the U.K.

1959: Bobby Darin’s "Mack the Knife" debuts on the pop charts. The song from "Three Penny Opera" will be Darin's biggest hit.

1968: The Beatles’ "Hey Jude" is released.

1969: The 3-day Texas International Pop Festival opened at the Dallas International Motor Speedway. Performers included Chicago Transit Authority, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin and Santana.

1972: John Lennon and Yoko Ono played their "One To One" concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

1973: Denny Sewell quits Wings.

1973: After two so-so albums, the post Jim Morrison Doors have parted. Rolling Stone reports Ray Manzarek is back in L.A. putting a new group together.

1975: James Taylor’s "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" peaks at #5 on the pop singles chart.

1975: Bad Company’s "Feel Like Making Love" hits the U.K. chart.

1975: Steely Dan enters the U.K. singles chart for the first time with "Do it Again."

1980: Pat Benatar’s "You Better Run" peaks at #42 on the pop singles chart.

1980: Cher made an unannounced appearance as vocalist with Black Rose at a concert in New York’s Central Park.

1980: Paul Simon’s "One Trick Pony"hits the UK LP chart.

1981: The Rolling Stones released their "Tattoo You" LP. The album would go on to top the LP chart for 9 weeks and has sold over 3 million copies.

1984: Beatles fans paid $271,180 for memorabilia at an auction in London, England.

1986: Steve Winwood’s "Higher Love" hits #1 on the singles chart; Mick Jagger’s "Ruthless People" peaks at #51 and David Lee Roth’s "Yankee Rose" peaks at #16.

1988: Brenda Lee sues MCA Records for $20 million for unpaid royalties (the suit is settled out-of-court).

1989: Guns N’ Roses guitarist Izzy Stradlin is arrested for creating a disturbance on an airline flight.

1990: Paul Anka is naturalized as an American citizen in Las Vegas (as his car is towed away by the police).

1991: Dottie West was critically injured in a car accident while en route to perform at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. She died five days later.

1991: Jan Berry (Jan & Dean) married Gertie Filip in Las Vegas. The marriage took place onstage during a Jan & Dean performance.

1993: Billy Joel became the first musical guest on CBS-TV’s "The Late Show with David Letterman" when the show debuted.

1995: James Taylor and ex-wife Carly Simon reunited for their first concert together in 16 years on Martha’s Vineyard, MA.

1998: Roberto Augusto Miranda Soares was shot four times when he refused to give up the keys to his Mercedes to robbers. Soares was the president of Sony Music/Brazil.

2007: Former Eagles axeman Don Felder plays a free show at a cook-off event in Sparks, Nevada.

2008: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band play a the Harley Davidson's 105th Anniversary Celebration in Milwaukee.

2008: ZZ Top play a show at Milwaukee's annual Summerfest.
